Process

Each illustration begins as an ink drawing on heavy watercolour paper. Inspiration for imagery is based on a variety of sources, experiences, objects and places that make me happy.
I establish a background of loose puddles of colour. This gives a nice vibrance to the illustration but also allows the main subject to really "pop" forward.Base layers of colour are added to the main subject. At this stage it is still rather flat, but these colour structures inform the next layers which bring the subject to life through volume and contrast.I build up many layers of thin colour washes. Finer details are added and highlights are drawn with white ink. When I'm satisfied with the overall look, I sign the work, scan the finished piece and pour a whisky.
